Replacing Filament While Printing

Replacing Filament While Printing

It happens. You started a print but realize there isn’t enough remaining filament. Or, you just want to use up any small amounts left.

Not to worry! You can easily pause the print, swap filament, and then resume the print without missing a beat. Below are instructions on how to make that swap while printing on the Asteroid toolhead.

Step 1. Pause the Print from FabOne

Navigate to app.protosthetics.com > Galileo > Print Control. Then, click “Pause.”

PAUSE

To ensure a successful merge, we recommend you don't keep the printer paused for more than 10 minutes.

Step 2. Push the Tension Lever All the Way Back

Wait for the toolhead to auto-home itself. It will automatically go to the top left of the printer.

Then, push the green lever all the way back away from yourself. This will loosen all the tension on the filament.

Step 3: Remove the Guide Tube

Press down on the black ring circling the guide tube. Use your other hand to pull the guide tube up and out of the hole.

Step 4. Pull the Filament Out of the Toolhead

Grab the filament and pull it up. With the toolhead heated and the tension released, it should come easy.

Step 5 : Push New Filament into Toolhead Until it “Clicks.”

After swapping the filament roll, snip the end at a 45 degree angle. Then, insert the new filament into the toolhead until you hear a “click.”

Step 6: Reset Tension & Re-Insert the Guide Tube

Step 7: Resume the Print from FabOne

Navigate to app.protosthetics.com > Galileo > Print Control. Then, click “Resume.”

Your toolhead will slowly move back into place and resume printing.
